Palms wins SCGA Amateur at Musgrove Mill
|
Oldham and Gallman tie for second
|
After a hot start and holding
the lead during the final round
Will Oldham of Spartanburg
came to the final hole with a
chance to tie Palms and force
a playoff.
Oldham, a Virginia Tech
golfer, saw his approach shot
roll over the green.
"I had 150 yards to the hole
and I was trying to hit it a little
behind and to the right on the
safe part of the green but I
guess the adrenaline set in and
I hit it too far," said Oldham
His third shot left him with a 18
foot par putt that slid past the
hole.
"All you can ask for is to put
yourself in that situation and
have a chance," said Oldham.

Carolina Amateur. The Virginia Tech golfer finished in a tie for
second place.
USC Upstate golfer Josh
Gallman also had a chance to
force a playoff on the final
hole.
Gallman hit a near perfect
second shot to within 20 feet of
the pin.
"I was screaming at it," he said.
"Go right and draw it in and
give me a chance to win this
thing. I took dead aim and it
ended up pretty good," said
the golfer from Gaffney.
Gallman's birdie putt just
missed the hole and he
finished in a tie for second with
Oldham.
"A couple of early mistakes I
made today made me lose by
one," said Gallman.

on the final hole of the South Carolina Amateur. Gallman's putt
just missed the hole and left him in a tie for second place.
Two-time SCGA Player of the Year Steve Liebler of
Irmo finished in fourth place for the championship.
Caleb Sturgeon, a 15 year old from Laurens and a
member at Musgrove Mill shot a second round 66 to
hold the lead half way through the championship.
Lee Palms came from
two shots off the lead to
win the 77th SCGA
Amateur championship
at Musgrove Mill.
Palms shot a final
round 3-under par 69
for a 5-under par total
for the tournament and
a one shot victory.
"To win your home state
amateur is huge," said
the champion. "It
means even more to
me since I am part of
the association," said
the SCGA board
member.
The 39 year old mid-am
moved past a pair of
college golfers with four
birdies on the back nine
in the final round.
"I really didn't have any
idea of how I stood
during the round. I just
put my head down,
picked my targets and
hit. I wasn't worrying
about anything else,"
said Palms.
Palms came to the final
hole with a two shot
lead over the field but
an errant tee shot
almost cost him the
lead.
"I stood on the tee and played the shot over and over again. I had my
routine in my mind. I was going to hit it down the right side, but I
made one of the worst swings I made all day," said Palms.
The tee shot hit a tree on the left side of the fairway but bounced
back and stayed in play rather than falling out of bounds.
Palms pitched out of trouble and then hit an eight-iron to within 20
feet of the pin. He two-putted for a bogey and then had to wait for the
final group to finish.

Will Oldham began play on
the final hole tied with Palms
at five-under par while Josh
Gallman was one shot back
at four-under par for the
tournament.
Gallman hit his second shot
to within 20 feet of the pin
giving the USC Upstate golfer
a birdie opportunity to tie
Palms and Oldham.
Oldham's second shot
trickled over the green. His
recovery shot left him with an
18 foot put for par to force a
playoff.
Gallman missed his birdie
attempt and Oldham watched
his par putt also miss leaving
both players a shot behind
Palms in a tie for second
place.
The victory was the second
major championship Palms
has won at the course near
Clinton. He had previously
won the 2003 SCGA Mid-Am
at Musgrove Mill.
SCGA Executive Director presents Musgrove Mill head golf professional Jeff
Tallman with a plaque in recognition for the club hosting the 2008 SCGA
Amateur. This year's championship was the sixth major Carolinas championship
hosted by the club.
Palms will next play in his first USGA championship event. The
Greenville Country Club golfer qualified for the US Amateur in
Pinehurst later this month.
"If I can get to match play, you never know what can happen. I'm
playing pretty good and making lots of birdies, it's all new to me and
I'm looking forward to it," said the new South Carolina state
champion.
