Bridwell wins
Powerade Greenville County Amateur
at Verdae Greens
Trey Bridwell fired a final round 3-under par 69 to win the
2008 Powerade Greenville County Amateur championship
at Verdae Greens.
Bridwell entered the final round with a five shot lead over
the rest of the field. The Coker College golfer from Greer
shot a six-under par 66 in the second round to take
command of the championship.
Former champion and Furman golfer Garland Ferrell and
former Clemson golfer Zach Siefert tied for second  eleven
shots behind Bridwell.
Stanley wins Coca-Cola Spartanburg
County Amateur title at Woodfin Ridge
Daniel Stanley of Boiling Springs set a Spartanburg
County Amateur record by shooting a final round 62 to
claim the 2008 Coca-Cola Spartanburg County Amateur
championship.
The Newberry College golfer started the day two shots off
the lead but roared past the other contenders with his
record setting round.
Stanley won the championship by eight shots over second
round leader Kyle Milner. Taylor Hough finished third while
defending champion Mike Gravley was fourth in the 54
hole event played at Woodfin Ridge Golf Club.
College Golfers sweep County titles
The youth movement in Upstate golf was center stage at
the county championships in Anderson, Greenville and
Spartanburg Counties.
The championships which had been dominated in the past
few years by veteran golfers were each won by a college
player.
Anderson University golfer Adam Sheriff started the string
of victories for young players when he won the Anderson
County championship at Brookstone Meadows.
Sheriff won his first county championship playing in his first
county championship. The Trojans rising senior is no
stranger to the top of the leader board.
Sheriff has a college conference championship and
individual tournament title to his credit so winning a county
title against outstanding competition should not be a
surprise.
Trey Bridwell ran away from the field at the Powerade
Greenville County Amateur championship. A second round
six-under par 66 and final round three-under par 69
helped the Coker College golfer win by eleven shots.
The closest contenders to Bridwell were also college
golfers. Garland Ferrell of Furman and recent Clemson
grad and Tiger golfer Zach Siefert tied for second.
Daniel Stanley played college golf last year at Newberry for
a team that won the South Atlantic Conference title.
Individually Stanley posted three top-three finishes in
college events. As a junior, the Boiling Springs golfer
played in the US Junior championship.
Stanley posted a tournament record setting round of
10-under par 62 to win his first Coca-Cola Spartanburg
Amateur title. Stanley started the final round two shots
behind second round leader Kyle Milner.
The winners final round 62 betters the Spartanburg
County Amateur record of 63 held by former champion
Stan Sill.
The champions of the three county tournaments reflect a
change at the top of the leader boards for many area
events. Younger golfers are replacing some of the older
more established players as winners and top finishers at
local events.
Newcomers have claimed titles at the Greater Greer Open,
Southern Oaks Open and several other Upstate amateur
events.
The rise in the number of young golfers and college
golfers competing and winning on the local level is also
reflected in some recent recognition received by the South
Carolina Junior Golf Association.
The SCJGA was recognized as the top junior golf
organization in the county by Golf Digest Magazine. The
program is considered the model junior golf program in the
country.
The SCJGA has produced more than its share of
outstanding golfers. Professionals Lucas Glover, Jonathan
Byrd, Charles Warren, Bill Haas, Kyle Thompson and D.J.
Trahan are all members of the PGA Tour.
The Association has also helped in the development of
countless college golfers and high school golfers who now
are becoming the dominant players at tournaments all over
South Carolina.
While Mid-Am golfers are still solid contenders for area
championships at least for this year the guard is changing
and the young players are claiming almost all the
headlines.
